How to Run an Instagram Giveaway: A Step-by-Step Guide

From writing the rules to announcing the winner, here's how to run an Instagram giveaway that grows your account without losing your followers' trust.

An Instagram giveaway is one of the fastest ways to reach new people and reward the followers you already have. But a giveaway that looks rigged can do more damage than no giveaway at all. Follow these steps to run one that's simple to enter, easy to manage and transparent from start to finish.

1. Pick a prize your audience actually wants

A prize related to your account or product attracts people who are genuinely interested in what you do. A generic high-value prize brings plenty of entries — and plenty of accounts that unfollow the day after the draw.

2. Keep the entry rules simple

Common entry methods are following the account, liking the post and leaving a comment. Each extra requirement lowers participation and makes the entry list harder to check. If you ask people to tag friends, think twice: it boosts reach, but it also floods the comments.

3. Follow Instagram's promotion guidelines

Instagram's Promotion Guidelines put the responsibility for running a promotion lawfully on you. In short, your rules should make clear that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram, and you shouldn't encourage people to tag themselves in content they don't appear in. Giveaway laws also vary by country — in many places a giveaway that requires a purchase to enter is treated very differently from a free one — so check the rules where you and your entrants are based.

4. Post the full rules in the caption

  • The prize and the number of winners.
  • How to enter.
  • The closing date and time, including the time zone.
  • When and how winners will be announced.
  • How long a winner has to reply before the prize goes to an alternate.
  • Who can enter (age, country).

5. Collect the entries and draw the winner

When entries close, open the post on a computer, copy all the comments and paste them into the Instagram Giveaway Picker — the usernames are extracted automatically, without logging in to Instagram. Remove entries that don't meet the rules; “One entry per person” removes duplicate usernames automatically. Pick at least one or two alternates in case the winner doesn't respond.

Draw an Instagram winner

Be careful with third-party tools that ask for access to your Instagram account. Never share your password with a giveaway tool.

6. Announce the winner transparently

Screen-record the draw and post it as a Story or Reel — the countdown and name reveal make a great piece of content. Add the result link to your Story or bio: anyone who opens it can see how many people entered, the winners and alternates, the date and time, and the full entry list. The result can't be edited, so “was I even in the draw?” has a clear answer.

7. Contact the winner — carefully

Message the winner from your own account and let your followers know how you'll get in touch. Scammers often create look-alike accounts and message entrants claiming they've won; warning your audience in advance protects them.
